Dear Friends, Family and Neighbors,                                                             April 5, 2011

Your fire department needs your help.  The department is in need of volunteers now more than ever.  Some fire departments in Onondaga County have had to go to combined paid and volunteer firefighters.  This has raised taxes to the property owners in these communities. Borodino and Spafford Volunteer Fire Departments would like to take a different direction, with your help.

There are many different roles a person can perform in a volunteer fire department.  Your community needs you. Being a volunteer fire person doesn’t mean you necessarily have to enter a burning building.  The majority of our calls are medical in nature.  There are many other supporting roles that make up a fire department and support the community.  There is a need for truck drivers, pump operators, E.M.Ts, manual laborers, corporate officers and line officers.  All training and equipment is supplied to you by the fire department along with Onondaga County. Enhance your knowledge and preparedness in an ever changing world.

The benefits of being a local firefighter can be rewarding.  On the financial end there is a small tax break on your property tax or state income tax. The satisfaction that comes from helping your neighbor in their greatest time of need is priceless.  Giving back to the community in which you live only makes for a better community and we all benefit.  The department asks that you make a minimum number of meetings and practices.  There is a training course for new members that are required and very informative.  Then we ask that you respond to whatever calls that you can.  As husbands, wives, employees, students, business owners and retirees, we understand there are times of the year that your participation may be less. This is understandable and all our members experience this. The friendships you make can help you personally and make our community a better place to live.

You are welcome to come to the Borodino and Spafford Fire Departments any time to talk. Most of you know members of the departments and we encourage you to speak to them about what it means to be a member.
